Welcome to my homepage.

Hi, I’m Hernán.

I’m a research scientist working in the area of cardiovascular fluid mechanics, especially in large arteries. My research interests are focused on understanding hemodynamics in human vasculature, especially when pathologies are presented, such as aneurysms or stenotic arteries. Besides, I’m very curious about the effect of endovascular therapies, such as coiling and stenting on blood flow alterations, the development of new endovascular devices and how computational modeling can predict treatment outcomes to support clinicians in their decision.

I did my PhD at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona, Spain in the Departament de Tecnologies de la Informació i les Comunicacions (DTIC). Currently, I’m working as a research scientist at Philips – Medisys in France.

My PhD thesis was about endovascular coiling and its influence on intra-aneurysmal hemodynamics by computational techniques. The thesis was under supervision of Prof. Alejandro F. Frangi and Dr. Ignacio Larrabide and was developed in the Computational Imaging and Simulation Technologies in Biomedicine (CISTIB), Barcelona, Spain. My background is mechanical engineering and I received my degree from the Universidad de Chile, Santiago in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DIMEC) in 2006. In my engineering thesis, I investigated the relationship between aneurysm morphology, hemodynamics and its rupture status using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and it was the first contact with biomedical modeling, hemodynamics and cerebral aneurysms. This thesis was supervised by Prof. Alvaro Valencia and led to one journal publication.
